Do you pay the full rental amount upfront, and when is your card charged?

Updated: July 17, 2026

Short answer

Payment timing is set in your Rental Agreement after the team confirms your booking, and a security deposit is required before pickup. Grant Motor Group places that deposit as a refundable security hold. The hold reserves funds but is not charged, and it is released after a clean return inspection. Rates change, so confirm your current quote.

The money side of an exotic rental has two parts that people often mix up. The first is the rental charge, the daily rate times the number of days. When you pay it is set in your Rental Agreement after the team confirms your booking. The second is a refundable security hold, a separate amount that is required before pickup. The hold reserves funds without spending them, and Grant Motor Group releases it after we inspect the car and confirm it came back clean. Below is how each one works and why the two are not the same thing.

Do you pay the full rental amount before you drive?

Payment timing is set in your Rental Agreement after the team confirms your booking. A rental charge is simply the daily rate multiplied by your days, and your agreement spells out when it is collected.

Your reservation request on the site is not a confirmed booking. The team confirms it, then sends the Rental Agreement that sets the payment schedule. If you booked a multi-day trip, any multi-day discount is already baked into that total, so you are not paying a day at a time.

To put real numbers on it, Grant Motor Group's daily rates currently run from $399 for the BMW M2 Competition up to $1,499 for the Ferrari 458 Italia Liberty Walk. A two-day booking on the M2 is roughly an $800 rental charge before any multi-day discount, delivery, or taxes. A weekend in the Ferrari is a far larger number. Those rates can change, so treat them as a guide and confirm current pricing for your exact quote when you book. The point is simple: whatever the total, your Rental Agreement tells you when it is due.

Why the security hold is not the same as your rental payment

The security hold is money reserved on your card, not money taken from it. This is the single most misread part of an exotic rental bill, so it is worth slowing down on. When we place a security hold before pickup, your bank sets that amount aside and lowers your available credit, but no funds actually leave your account.

In payment terms this is an authorization hold, also called a preauthorization. As Stripe explains it, a preauthorization is "a temporary hold on a specific amount of the available balance on a credit or debit card," and the money stays with your card issuer rather than moving to the business. The charge only becomes real if and when the merchant "captures" it. If nothing is captured, the hold falls off on its own.

Here is the order of events on a clean rental:

  1. You send a reservation request, the team confirms it, and you sign the Rental Agreement.
  2. Before pickup, the refundable security hold is placed on your card. At handoff we check your license and insurance, and the car's condition is checked.
  3. The rental charge is collected on the schedule in your Rental Agreement.
  4. You return the car and its condition is checked again.
  5. After a clean inspection, the hold is released and those reserved funds free up again.

A common question after a return is about this exact moment: the hold still shows on the statement, and people worry they were double charged. Almost always they were not. The rental charge already settled, and what is left is the reserved hold winding down. The catch is timing on the release. A hold is not instant to clear the way a purchase reversal feels instant. Wikipedia's overview of authorization holds notes that for car rentals, a hold "can be kept by the merchant for up to 30 days from the date of original charge," and that release depends on your bank's own settlement schedule. In practice most holds clear within a few days to two weeks after an undamaged return. So if you check your statement the morning after you drop the car off and still see the reserved amount, that is normal. It is winding down, not a second charge.

Why a credit card is the best way to carry the hold

A credit card is the best way to carry the hold; a debit hold ties up your own cash. Confirm card options when you book. The reason is a concrete money one.

On a credit card, the hold blocks part of your credit line. On a debit card, the same hold pulls real cash out of your checking account and parks it, and getting it back takes longer. The deposit guide from Nomora makes the mechanism clear: a credit-card hold means "the money is blocked but not actually taken," while "debit-card or cash deposits are usually taken as a real charge rather than a hold, so they take longer to refund."

There is also a coverage angle. The hold has to sit on the card comfortably alongside the rental charge, so the driver needs enough available credit for both at once. On the highest-value cars, the value of the machine drives that. The Ferrari 458 Italia is a six-figure car with the last naturally aspirated V8 Ferrari built before the turbo era, and even the "value" pick in the fleet, the Corvette Z06, is a $106,395 car packing the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8 ever made. Reserving a buffer against that kind of asset is why the hold exists.

How much is the hold, and can you predict the total?

The honest answer on the hold amount is that it varies by car, and Grant Motor Group confirms your exact figure at booking rather than posting one number for the whole fleet. That is deliberate. A hold that makes sense for the BMW M2 is not the right hold for the Ferrari, so a single published figure would be wrong for most renters.

What we can give you is the shape of it. Across the premium and exotic rental industry, refundable security holds commonly land in the four figures and scale with the vehicle's value. Nomora's deposit guide, which quotes European figures, puts premium and luxury pre-authorization holds in the €1,000 to €3,000-plus range as a general class figure. These are common industry numbers, not Grant Motor Group's published figures, and your car's real hold is set in US dollars when you reserve. Ask for it directly and you will have the exact amount before you commit.

So your true "money needed" for a booking is two lines, not one:

What it isWhen it hits your cardDoes it come back?
Rental charge (daily rate x days)On the schedule in your Rental AgreementNo, this is the payment for the rental
Refundable security holdRequired before pickupYes, released after a clean return inspection

A few smaller items can affect the final total. Return the car at the fuel level you received it; a refueling fee applies if it comes back lower. Delivery is available anywhere in Scottsdale; a delivery fee applies and is confirmed at booking. Delivery outside Scottsdale is confirmed at booking along with the fee. And cancellation terms can apply if plans change, so confirm the window when you book. None of these change the core structure: one charge you pay, one hold you get back.

Ready to know your exact numbers?

The clean version is this: budget for the rental charge on the schedule your Rental Agreement sets, keep room on your card for a refundable hold on top, and expect the hold to clear after a clean return on your bank's timeline. The only figures we cannot post here are the ones that change by car and by date, and those are a quick conversation away. Text or call our team at (623) 400-3031, or send a message to @grantmotorgroup on Instagram, and we will give you the rate, the hold amount for your specific car, and a delivery time anywhere in Scottsdale before you put anything on your card.
