Can you add a second driver to an exotic rental, and does it cost extra?

Updated: July 17, 2026

Short answer

Yes. Grant Motor Group can add a second driver to any exotic rental, but that driver must be listed on the agreement and meet the same rules as you: a valid license, a clean record, and their own insurance. Adding a driver may cost extra, so confirm the fee when you book.

Yes, you can share the wheel. Grant Motor Group lets you add a second driver to any car in the fleet, from the BMW M2 Competition up to the Ferrari 458 Liberty Walk. There is one firm rule: that person has to go on the rental agreement before they drive, and they have to clear the same checks you did. A second driver may add a fee; ask us about additional drivers when you book. Below is how it works and why the paperwork matters so much on a six-figure car.

Can you add a second driver to an exotic rental?

Yes, a second driver is allowed on any Grant Motor Group rental, as long as we add them to the agreement first. The step is simple. Tell us who else plans to drive, they show a valid license and proof of their own insurance, and we write them onto the contract as an authorized driver. Once that is done, both of you are cleared to get behind the wheel.

The part people miss is what happens if you skip it. An authorized driver is anyone named on the rental contract. If someone who is not on the contract drives the car, the rental agreement can be treated as broken. That means the protection tied to the rental can fall away right when you need it. So handing the keys to a friend "just for a minute" is the one move that can turn a small parking scrape into a bill you pay in full.

This is not unique to us. It is how the whole rental industry works. The Insurance Information Institute, the main education arm of the U.S. insurance business, notes that with a personal policy, "whatever auto insurance and deductibles you have on your own car would apply when you rent a car (providing you are using the rental car for recreation and not for business)." That coverage follows the people the policy names, not strangers. The rental contract works the same way. Only listed drivers are inside the tent.

Adding a driver up front costs you a minute. Fixing an unlisted-driver problem after a crash can cost the value of the car. That is the whole reason we ask.

What does a second driver need to qualify?

A second driver has to meet the exact same standards as the main renter. There is no lighter set of rules for the person riding shotgun who wants a turn. At Grant Motor Group, every driver must:

  1. Be at least 25 years old, or 21 with prior approval from us.
  2. Hold a valid driver's license. International visitors bring a valid driver's license from their home country, plus an International Driving Permit if that license is not in English.
  3. Have a clean driving record with no major violations; a DUI, reckless driving, or a recent suspension is usually disqualifying. Confirm your situation when you book.
  4. Carry their own full-coverage auto insurance that is active and in their own name, with both collision and physical-damage cover.

That last point trips up couples and friends who assume one policy stretches to cover both of them. It usually does not. Insurance follows the named insured, so a second driver generally needs their own policy that will respond for a high-value car. We confirm the exact liability limits we require at booking, since a standard personal policy often has value caps that fall short on an exotic.

The reason the bar sits this high is the value on the line. A McLaren 600LT tops out at 201 mph and a Ferrari 458 revs to a 9,000 rpm redline. These are not economy sedans. A rental company hands that risk only to drivers who are old enough, clean enough, and insured enough to carry it. A second driver who cannot clear the checks cannot be added, and letting them drive anyway puts the whole rental at risk.

Does adding a second driver cost extra?

A second driver may add a cost. Across the car-rental world, a second driver usually carries a per-driver, per-day fee, and that is the norm you should plan for. Grant Motor Group does not publish a second-driver rate, so ask us about additional drivers when you book, and you will see the real number before you commit.

To set expectations, here is what the mainstream rental market charges. These are common industry figures, not Grant Motor Group's published numbers:

  • A typical daily fee. Avis lists an additional-driver fee of "$13 per day per additional driver" in most states, and caps how many extra drivers you can add. Everyday rentals commonly land in that low-teens-per-day range. Exotic rates can run higher because the insurance exposure is larger.
  • A spouse or partner is often free. Avis lets a spouse or life partner drive "without an additional fee as long as they have a valid driver's license and are 25 or older." Many companies follow the same courtesy.
  • Some relationships or states are exempt. In California, for example, Avis says the additional-driver fee "do[es] not apply to a parent, sibling or child of the renter." Rules shift by location.

Treat those as a map, not a quote. The honest answer for your car is the one we give you at booking. Ask when you reserve, and the second-driver cost stops being a guessing game.

Why an unlisted driver is a costly mistake

Skipping the paperwork can leave you personally on the hook for the car and for anything that happens on the road. Two Arizona facts make this concrete.

First, the state's required insurance minimums are low. The Arizona Department of Transportation sets mandatory liability at just "$25,000 bodily-injury liability for one person and $50,000 for two or more people" plus "$15,000 property-damage liability." Those numbers, written 25/50/15, were built for ordinary cars. They do not come close to covering the damage an exotic can do in a crash, or the value of the exotic itself. An unlisted driver with only bare-minimum coverage is a gap you fall straight into.

Second, in a rental, the renter is the driver of record. If a speed or red-light camera catches the car, the ticket routes to the account, not the person who happened to be driving. The Town of Paradise Valley spells it out: "The rental car company will notify us with the renter's information," and the citation is then issued to you. A single Arizona speeding conviction also adds three points to a license through the state MVD, and 8 or more points in a year can trigger a suspension. If your second driver picks up a ticket, you may be the one untangling it.

Add it up. A high-value car, thin state insurance minimums, and citations that trace back to you. Putting your second driver on the agreement, with their own coverage confirmed, is the simplest insurance against all three.

How to add your second driver before your trip

Adding a second driver is a two-minute step, and the easiest time to do it is when you book. Tell us who else will drive, have them ready with a valid license and proof of their own insurance, and we write them onto the agreement and confirm any fee for your specific car. Do it before pickup so both of you are cleared to drive from the moment the car is handed over.

Tell us at booking if anyone else will drive, and make sure they bring their license and proof of coverage on pickup day. Handling it at booking is smoother, and it means nobody stands around while a policy is verified.
