Can tourists and out-of-state visitors rent an exotic car in Scottsdale?

Updated: June 26, 2026

Short answer

Yes. Visitors from other states and from abroad can rent an exotic car in Scottsdale, and you do not need an Arizona license. Out-of-state renters use a valid U.S. license. International renters use a valid driver's license from their home country, plus an International Driving Permit if that license is not in English. The age, insurance, and clean-record rules apply to everyone.

Yes, tourists and out-of-state visitors can rent an exotic car in Scottsdale. You do not need an Arizona license or Arizona residency. A valid U.S. driver's license works for visitors from other states, and international visitors can rent with their home license, plus an International Driving Permit if that license is not in English. The standard rental rules on age, insurance, and driving record apply to everyone, local or not. Scottsdale is a destination built for this, so visitors make up a real share of exotic rentals here.

Renting as an out-of-state U.S. visitor

If you live in another state, your home driver's license is all you need for the license itself. There is no Arizona-specific paperwork. The rest of the requirements are the same as for a local:

  • You are 25 or older, or 21 with prior GMG approval.
  • You have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record with no major violations.
  • You carry proof of comprehensive insurance that reaches a high-value car. Confirm the exact limit with the team before you travel.

The piece most out-of-state renters overlook is insurance, not the license. Your own auto policy often follows you onto a rental, but coverage on a six-figure exotic can be capped or excluded. Handle that before your trip rather than at the curb on delivery day, so nothing holds up the handoff.

Your driving record follows you across state lines, so a clean history in your home state is what matters, not where you are renting. There is nothing to transfer or re-file in Arizona. The same goes for your license class: a standard license from any state covers an exotic here, with no Arizona-specific endorsement needed. The only homework for a U.S. visitor is the insurance question, which is worth settling before you fly.

Renting as an international visitor

International visitors are welcome too. Along with your home-country driver's license, you need an international driving permit (IDP) if that license is not in English. The IDP is a standard translation of your license that you arrange in your home country before you travel, usually through a national automobile association.

Bring your home license and, if it is not in English, your IDP. They confirm that you are licensed to drive, which keeps the handoff fast. The one thing to plan ahead is the IDP itself, because you cannot get one once you have arrived in the U.S. It must be issued at home, and it is only valid alongside your original license, not on its own.

If your home insurance will not cover a rental in the U.S., ask the team about your options well before your rental date so you arrive with coverage already sorted.

A practical note for international visitors: U.S. roads are right-hand traffic with automatic-friendly cars, and Scottsdale's wide, well-marked roads are an easy place to get comfortable. Give yourself a few relaxed minutes during the delivery walkthrough to set mirrors, learn the controls, and get used to the car before you head out. The team hands the car over in person, so it is the right moment to ask anything about how it drives.

Insurance for visitors

Insurance is the requirement that catches travelers off guard, so it deserves its own check. The rule is the same for everyone: comprehensive coverage with a liability limit high enough for an exotic, active and in your name. GMG confirms the exact figure when you book. The question is whether your existing policy reaches a high-value rental.

For a U.S. visitor, call your insurer and confirm two things: that the policy covers a rental valued well over $200,000, and that exotic or high-performance cars are not excluded. For an international visitor, your home policy may not extend to the U.S. at all, in which case a short-term or non-owner policy may be the answer.

Either way, do not leave it to chance. A quick call before your trip tells you whether you are covered or need to arrange something, and GMG can point you toward options if there is a gap.

One more tip for travelers: start the insurance conversation a week or two before your trip, not the night before. If your current policy will not reach a six-figure rental, arranging a rider or a short-term policy takes a little lead time, and doing it early means you land with proof in hand. A delivered car can have you driving within minutes of the walkthrough, but only if the coverage is already in place.

Delivery that fits a trip

For a visitor, delivery is the part that makes this easy. Grant Motor Group brings the car to you anywhere in Scottsdale, so the rental can start at your hotel or resort rather than a counter across town. The team can collect it the same way at the end. That turns the rental into something that fits around your trip instead of eating a half-day of it.

This works especially well for a celebration weekend or a planned drive to Sedona. Tell the team your hotel and your timing, and the car can be waiting when you are ready. Scottsdale is built for this kind of trip: mild winter weather, open roads, and Sedona and the desert highways a short drive away.

If you are flying private into Scottsdale Airport, ask about an airport handoff so the rental starts the moment you land. For a celebration weekend, having the car delivered to your resort makes the arrival part of the experience. Either way, the rental bends around your trip instead of the other way around.

How to book from out of town

Reserve before you arrive. Have your dates, your car choice, your Scottsdale delivery spot, and your documents ready, then call or text (623) 400-3031 or message @grantmotorgroup.

Confirm your insurance early, especially if you are traveling internationally, so the only thing left to do when you land is drive. Booking ahead also matters more for visitors, because your dates are usually fixed by your trip, and the most popular cars get claimed first in peak season.
