Can you smoke in a rented exotic car, and is there a cleaning fee?

Updated: July 17, 2026

Short answer

No. Smoking, vaping, and cannabis are banned in every Grant Motor Group exotic, and yes, a cleaning fee applies if you break that rule. Mainstream rental smoking fees run about $100 to $450, and exotic detailing to remove smoke odor commonly runs higher. Confirm your car's exact figure at booking.

Grant Motor Group runs a strict no-smoking fleet. You cannot smoke, vape, or use cannabis in any of our cars, from the BMW M2 up to the Ferrari 458. Break that rule and you will pay a cleaning fee, because getting smoke smell out of a high-end interior takes special equipment, hours of labor, and sometimes days off the road. The exact amount depends on the car and how bad the odor is, and we confirm it with you when you book.

Can you smoke in a Grant Motor Group exotic?

No, every car in our fleet is non-smoking, and that rule covers cigarettes, cigars, vape pens, and cannabis. There is no smoking version of any car we rent. We treat a vape the same as a cigarette, the same way the big rental brands do. Avis tells its renters to "not smoke or vape inside" and runs a "100 percent smoke-free" fleet. Hertz moved every car it owns to non-smoking back on February 1, 2013. The reason is simple. One person's cigarette leaves a smell and a residue that the next ten renters would have to sit in.

We back the rule with a condition check. The car's condition is checked at handoff and again at return. That check shows the car left clean and came back with, or without, evidence of smoking. It protects you from being blamed for old damage, and it protects the next driver from yours. This is the same handoff we use to check for scratches, curbed wheels, and fuel level, so nothing about the car's condition is a surprise later. If the car smells of old smoke when you pick it up, that is the moment to say so, because once the keys change hands the odor is on the current rental unless you flagged it.

What a smoking cleaning fee looks like

Expect a cleaning fee somewhere between a mainstream brand's charge and a higher exotic detailing bill. The published fees at the big rental companies give you the floor. Hertz lists a $100 cleaning fee for a car returned "with evidence of smoking." Avis lists "a cleaning fee of up to $450." Exotic and luxury specialists usually land above that range, because the interiors cost more to clean and the car sits idle longer while the smell is treated.

Rental typeTypical smoking cleaning fee
Mainstream, Hertzaround $100
Mainstream, Avisup to $450
Exotic and luxury detailingcommonly higher, often several hundred dollars

Those are common industry figures, not Grant Motor Group's published numbers. We do not post a single flat smoking fee, because the real cost depends on the car and the severity. A faint odor in the BMW M2 is a smaller job than a heavy smell soaked into a Ferrari's leather. When there is clear evidence of smoking, a cleaning charge applies and is assessed against your security hold; ask us how it is calculated. That hold is an authorization that reserves funds without charging them, and it comes back to you in full after a clean return. These rates can change, so confirm the current figure for your car when you book, and ask us to put it in writing if you want it on hand.

Why smoke is so hard to remove from an exotic

Smoke is expensive to remove because the residue soaks into soft materials and keeps releasing odor for weeks. Researchers call this leftover residue thirdhand smoke. Sticky nicotine particles cling to fabric, carpet, and dust, and they can stay there for days, weeks, and even months. Work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that this leftover nicotine reacts with ordinary indoor air to form tobacco-specific nitrosamines, which are carcinogens, and that the level of those new compounds rose about 10 times after only three hours of exposure. The American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation notes that the homes of former smokers stayed polluted with thirdhand smoke for up to six months after the residents quit. Airing the car out and spraying an air freshener does not fix this. It only hides the smell for a few minutes.

To actually clear it, a detailer has to deep-clean the upholstery and run an oxidation or ozone treatment that breaks the odor molecules apart. Hertz says a smoked-in car is "taken out of service for up to 24 hours" and treated with a natural deodorizer and an oxidation process. On an exotic, that downtime is lost rental income, and the materials raise the stakes further. These cabins are built from leather, suede-like microfiber, and carbon fiber, not basic cloth. A McLaren 600LT can be ordered with Senna-derived carbon-fiber racing seats that weigh only about 7.3 pounds each, and its cockpit is wrapped in lightweight carbon fiber. A Ferrari 458 Liberty Walk is a six-figure car whose value lives partly in a clean, original interior. Soaking any of that in cigarette or cannabis smoke is a costly thing to undo, which is exactly why the fee exists.

How to avoid a cleaning fee entirely

The rule is easy to follow: keep all smoke out of the car. Here is how renters stay clear of the charge.

  1. Never smoke or vape inside. Step out of the car first. A two-minute stop costs nothing, while a returned-with-odor charge can run into the hundreds.
  2. Treat cannabis like tobacco. It is banned in the car and leaves the same lingering smell. In Arizona, an open or used cannabis product in a moving car can also bring its own legal trouble, separate from our fee.
  3. Do not let passengers light up. The fee follows the renter named on the contract, not the person who actually smoked.
  4. Skip the cover-up. Air freshener, cologne, and open windows do not remove residue, and a trained inspector will still smell it and see the yellow film it leaves on vents and headliners.
  5. Inspect the car at handoff. If you notice any old smoke smell before you drive off, point it out and get it noted, so you are never charged for a previous renter's habit.

Follow those five steps and smoking is simply a non-issue for your trip. The condition check at handoff does the rest, since it shows the car left clean and gives you proof if any question ever comes up.

Ready to book a clean exotic?

The answer is short: no smoking, no vaping, no cannabis, and a cleaning fee if you ignore that. Follow the rule and your security hold returns to you in full after a clean inspection, with nothing deducted. If you want your car's exact smoking policy and hold amount in writing, or you just want help choosing between the BMW M2 and the Lamborghini Urus S for the weekend, we are happy to walk you through it.
